"Too often, Hustle plays – I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry – a con game, talking fast to try and rush you past a plot point or story conclusion that seems to superficially make sense but falls apart if subjected to the slightest scrutiny. It’s also painfully formulaic – every week, about two thirds of the way through it seems that everything’s gone wrong for the team but by the end it’s revealed that the trap they were seemingly caught in was just part of a wider con and, aha, actually they were in control the whole time" -- I find this with Doctor Who. I know I've watched that poker episode but couldn't remember any of the details. With pocket Kings, I fold preflop anyway, so I'm going to think this was a made up hand.

You are right about all that. It's really obvious in the last season that the writer either seems to know nothing about how things work, or is deliberately playing dumb to keep the plot moving.

Case in point: First episode of new season - Ash (the friendly face of grifting) tries to gain access to a heavily guarded, security locked office in post 911 London. He does this by setting a fire off in the lobby, speaking REALLY LOUD and confidently to the security guard, and just breezing through.

Not that I've had much experience of trying to access a building without a pass, but I'm pretty sure the better way is to follow someone with a pass and SAY NOTHING. If you start blabbering to the guard, confidently or not, they are going to spot you. I know that the guard at the place I work at would be calling the police in no time if ANYONE spoke to him for any reason other than to ask for a best spot to park their car!

Too much of the show is like this - makes no sense. Either he's just blagging it himself, or he can't write a decent story and is forced to pad it with nonsense.
